Philosophy and Approach

Our priorities are to a) build and onboard fun games with sustainable economies into the Matchday Universe, b) build up the Universal Platform. The blockchain is the big underlying technological enabler to bring the Matchday Universe to life. What drives the Matchday Universe is extensibility, interoperability, and ownership - the same values that underpin web3 gaming.

As we achieve our product goals, we’ll progressively layer in blockchain technology, which will initially be transparent to all users.

The Goal: Transparency through Technology

We believe that the Universal Platform works as an open ecosystem. We want to give everyone in the Matchday Universe - users, developers, creators - full transparency around resource flows, in-game items, and be able to contribute and benefit from shared value creation.

Hence, our long term goal is to implement the majority of our Universal Platform stack on a blockchain, with key transactions performed through smart contracts and persisted on chain.

Achieving this will be progressive task, and we’ll approach it with these guidelines:

  1. Zero compromise on system performance and latency (ie. building systems to achieve eventual consistency)
  2. Zero requirement to interact with the blockchain (ie. non-custodial wallets using account abstraction and multi-party computation)

We plan to build our infrastructure on a high performance chain like Solana or subnets.

Opportunities

This is a non-exhaustive list of blockchain-enabled features in flight. The first chain integration we plan to support is Solana with game item exports.

Beyond what is in the Universe roadmap, we are not assigning hard timelines to these features at the moment.

Utility Token

We envision establishing the Universal Currency as an on-chain utility token. We would transition Matchday Gems to the to-be-named Universal Currency. Players holding Gems and Coins would be dropped the Universal Currency. While we are still working out details, we will always prioritize rewarding players who play and progress through our games - play-to-airdrop will take into account current and past “play”.

Tokenization of Collectibles and In-Game Items

Footballer cards - as collected by our users - are core to the Matchday Universe experience. They lend themselves perfectly to NFTs, which will drive item ownership and empower users to trade them on their preferred marketplace in a secure way.

Our approach to tokenization is to prioritize ownership record and game data on chain, rather than visual assets.

Extensibility and Interoperability

Achieving extensibility and interoperability will require storing key game state on-chain. We will start by establishing token and game data standards for on-chain persistence.

Token standards will be developed as part of our effort to standardize the data structure of in-game items. Game data standards will be crucial to provide the ability for each individual game to persist in-game progression in a soul-bound manner.
